MENTORING AND SUPERVISION AS CORRELATES OF UNIVERSITY OF EDUCATION TEACHING PRACTICE STUDENTS' PERFORMANCE IN PUBLIC SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN OGUN STATE

Abstract

This study examined the relationship among mentoring, supervision and university of education teaching practice students' performance in public secondary schools in Ogun State, due to the public outcry on the perceived low quality of teacher education in Nigeria. The study adopted a descriptive research design of survey type. The population comprised 1291students in the College of Specialised and Professional Education, Tai Solarin University of Education for 2021/2022 academic session out of which 258 students of the total population were selected using simple random sampling technique. Two self designed questionnaires tagged: Mentoring of Teaching Practice Students Questionnaire (MTPSP) and Supervision of Teaching Practice Students Questionnaire (STPSP) were used to collect data for the study. The two hypotheses of this study were tested using Pearson's Product-Moment Correlation (PPMC). Findings revealed that there is significant relationship between mentoring and students' teaching practice performance in public secondary school in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State (r = .623, n = 250, p = .005). Findings also showed that there is significant relationship between supervision and students' teaching practice performance in public secondary school in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State (r = .780, n = 250, p = .005).Based on the findings of this study, it is recommended among other recommendations that lecturers and cooperating teachers should be encouraged to adequately mentor teacher-trainees on the rudiments of teaching while supervisors should be mobilized to carry out rigorous and objective supervision towards enhanced performance of student-teachers during teaching practice.
