SOCIAL MEDIA ADDICTION AND ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS IN UYO METROPOLIS, AKWA IBOM STATE, NIGERIA

Abstract

The study was conducted to investigate the influence of social media addiction on the academic performance of secondary school students in Uyo Metropolis, Akwa-Ibom state, Nigeria. Two research questions and two corresponding null hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. Conceptual and empirical literature were reviewed in line with the objectives of the study. Descriptive survey and ex-post Facto research design were used to obtain data for the study. A sample size of 392 students were selected from a population of 6852 SS3 students using proportional sampling technique and were guided to respond to a self developed instrument designed for the study. The instrument was tested and it yielded reliability index of 0.81. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics of frequency counts and percentages to describe the demographic characteristics of the respondents and answer the research questions while inferential statistics of independent t-test was used to test the hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. The two hypotheses were accepted and the alternate rejected. The paper recommended the use of social media by students exceptionally for academic purposes to stem the tide of decline on academic performance.
