PERCEPTION OF TEACHERS ON THE USE OF WHATSAPP IN TEACHING AND LEARNING BUSINESS STUDIES IN JUNIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL TWO IN JOS NORTH AREA OF PLATEAU STATE, NIGERIA

Abstract

The objective of this study is to find out teacher's perceptions on the use of social media inteaching and learning Business Studies in JSS two in Jos-North Local Government Area of Plateau State, Nigeria. WhatsApp as a social media was used for the study. Two research questions and null hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. Descriptive survey design was used for this study and purposive sampling method was adopted to select a sample size of 104 Business Studies teachers as respondents for the study. Diffusion of Innovation Theory was used as the theoretical lens of the study. A self-structured questionnaire was used as the instrument for data collection.Descriptive statistics was used to analyze the research question while independent t-Test was used to test the formulated null hypothesis set at 0.05 level of significance. The results showed that the null hypotheses formulated were rejected, Flexibility (P-value >0.010) and effectiveness (P-value > 0.002). In conclusion, the finding indicated that there was significant difference in the perceptions of public and private schools' teachers on flexibility and effectiveness in the use of WhatsApp in teaching and learning Business Studies in Jos-North Area of Plateau State. It was recommended among others thatteachers should be encouraged to adopt WhatsApp platforms as a flexible and effective learning strategy in order to improve students' learning and social interaction skills and foster meta-cognition in students.
