SOCIAL INSTITUTION AND RELATIONSHIP IN LUKE 22:14-30: A SOCIAL INTERTEXTURE READING OF REMEMBRANCE MEALS AND EFFECTS ON HUMAN DIGNITY

The remembrance meal in Luke invites the reader to see how the Lukan Jesus
effectively implements the new era of humanity through a meal scene rich in both
social institutions and social relationships. Using intertexture as one of the subsets of
socio-rhetorical hermeneutics, this article reveals that Luke situates his remembrance
meal narrative to teach his community how to remember the Lukan Jesus and his
sacrifice on behalf of humanity. The intertexture reading further reveals that this
meal scene can activate different human institutions that aid in creating social
relationships within human society. The article concludes that Lukan Jesus uses the
remembrance meal scene to teach his newly inaugurated community how to
remember him as they interact through different social institutions and relationships.
Therefore, remembering Jesus in this context means the church and Christian
community embarking on actions that will help shape, transform, and restore
humanity's dignity.
