Abstract

The increasing demand for energy-efficient and remotely accessible home automation systems has led to the advancement of IoT-based smart home solutions. This paper presents a smart home automation system capable of remotely automating appliance operations and making autonomous decisions. The aim of the work is to deal with the problem associated with the challenges elderly and physically challenged individuals are facing while struggling with manual tasks for adjusting lights or appliances. The circuit is designed in such a way that the system can turn ON and OFF the appliances from any location as long as network signal is available at both ends. ESP8266 NodeMCU is incorporated in the circuit. The ESP8266 is to control the relay module to switch ON/OFF the bulbs and fan. A relay module interface board is also incorporated to allow us to control various appliances in homes. In this work, the relay module used is a 4-channel relay in a single module, each of the relays powers one appliance. Results obtained from the tests conducted with the prototype in my office and users at Institution administrative block, Library, and HND-1 and HND-2 Classes of the Department of Computer Engineering Kaduna Polytechnic, Kaduna show that appliances can be controlled from any location as long as network signal is available at both ends, while results with the prototype placed outside the network coverage show that the system is in-active.
